Note Names in First Position

The next few simple warm ups for plucking and fretting hands use only these notes. Plucking hand exercises are for fingerstyle guitarists, but fretting hand exercises apply also to plectrum guitar and electric guitar. Diatonic notes (white notes) are shown in black in circles, chromatic notes (black notes) are shown in blue in extended rectangles. Both the sharp note and its enharmonic equivalent flat are shown. These exercises should be played slowly at first and of course smoothly to avoid strain. Speed can be increased later. Variations on these are OK too so long as they are consistent and the playing position is maintained with correct fingers. Finger strength and coordination will improve with practice, but if it aches, shake and rest!

Spanish Guitar - Plucking Hand - 1

Nothing more nor less than simple i.m. and m.i. exercises over open strings 1,2,3,4,5 at steadily increasing speed from 40bpm to 160bpm.

When playing Spanish Guitar the mobility of fingers and thumb is greater than pure classical styles. Resting the thumb on 6 serves as a check for relative position of thumb and fingers and can set up a good hand position under proper guidance. Download the MP3 (see lower down Sibelius page) as a metronome....

If you get tired stop and rest!

Spanish Guitar - Plucking Hand - 6

Freddie reminded me of this one.... thanks for reminding me Freddie! This simple exercise on open strings has a static thumb and moving tremolo and is good practice for pieces with the melody in the tremolo rather than the bass. Speed varies from 40bpm to 160bpm.
